Tour de Hood

While watching Texas Country Reporter last night, we came across a great program taking place not too very far from us. It is called Tour de Hood . Dr. Veon McReynolds has in effect started an inner city cycling club. This cycling group is for all ages and abilities. He has collected an array of bicycles and allows folks to come out on Saturday mornings for a ride. The ride is at an easy pace for everyone to enjoy. At the halfway point, there is a break for fruit and water. Helmets, bikes, snacks, and even t shirts to wear are all provide to participants at no cost. All are invited to join. You can bring your own bike if you prefer. And if you have a bike that is not working, you are invited to come on Fridays and they will help you fix it! Dr. McReynolds is also wanting to get a few three wheeled bikes so that senior citizens who don’t feel comfortable on a bicycle will still be able to join in the fun of each week’s ride.

more on the mac

I had another Mac class last week. I learned a few more fun and useful things. While I still don’t know how to get Quick Books set up on my husband’s account, I did learn how to make a temporary bookmark. I learned how to peel off a tab to create a new window. I learned to push F3 to see everything in an expose view. I learned about screen saver and energy saver and that screen savers are really not needed these days, they are just for fun.

sobriety high school

I just heard about these “recovery” high schools today, though the first one began in 1989. These sobriety, sober, or recovery schools help teens who have been addicted to drugs and/or alcohol and have completed rehab treatment. The schools are a safe environment for these teens to go to finish their academic career without having to get caught up in the same environment where they got into trouble in the first place. There are not many recovery schools in the nation, but the ones in operation are seeing benefits and good results for the students. There are also a few colleges which implement recovery programs as well.

poetry coach

I learned recently that there is a new service available to those wanting to get poetry published. The Poetry Coach has a great looking website that will allow the aspiring poet to gain the added insight to getting his/her work(s) published. The Poetry Coach has lots of experience in writing, reading, and teaching. This looks like the perfect place to get that extra punch! And just maybe you too will find yourself a published poet!

sappy and mawkish

My daughter told me today that we had some Bill Gaither songs in our iTunes library. She noticed this because her and my husband were watching him on tv last night. I told her I was surprised since my husband and I think Gaither songs are pretty sappy. She asked what that meant. Instead of trying to explain it I told her to look it up. She read it out to me, “Overly sentimental, mawkish.” I told her that was a good definition. And that I like to “mock” those songs, which is what I thought she had read to me. She then corrected me and asked what “mawkish” means. I’d not known the word so we looked it up too. “Sentimental in a feeble or sickly way”. Yep, pretty right on target. And she said she will use that word next time she sees some PDA going on!

new Mac

I have been trying to learn how to use my new Mac. I’ve learned a few things this week. I’ve learned how to print, how to find my documents, how to do some effects to photos, how to print my photos. I’ve learned some of the cool projects we can do with our software. I’ve learned how to use the calendar, how set user accounts. I’ve also learned that there is still a lot more to learn!

not enough

In getting our new computer set up, we are trying to get the new version of quick books for Mac installed. But my husband hit a road block trying to get the old info added in to the new one…He found that he was going to have to download an introductory file then add the old info then have it convert to Mac. It took a while and then he found he did not have enough memory to do it in the first place. So he started deleting items from the old system to be able to down load the Quick Books. Finally, after hours of searching how to do this, he looked on the old computer to see that we just don’t have enough memory on the computer in the first place to do it!!! Back to square one…

Nittany Lion

In watching Penn State beat Texas in the women’s volleyball championship, I wanted to find out what a Nittany Lion is. Here is what I found:

“The Nittany Lion is essentially an ordinary mountain lion (also known as a cougar, puma, or panther), a creature that roamed central Pennsylvania until the 1880s (although unconfirmed sightings continued long after that time). By attaching the prefix “Nittany” to this beast, Mason gave Penn State a unique symbol that no other college or university could claim.”

Seems as if their Nittany Lion defeats the Longhorn this year!

one beater

I found out today that it is possible to run my mixer using just one beater. I had one egg white that needed to be beat til stiff. I had it in a large measuring cup that I knew would be too small for both beaters. So I decided to see if the mixer would run with just one beater. It did and it worked perfectly!

by-pass a fuse

In talking about thought processes this morning, my husband told me how to bypass a fuse. He said that you put one end of a screwdriver on the end of one wire and the other end of the screwdriver on the end of the other wire. You do this with the metal part of the screwdriver. This then acts as the conductor. I asked why you would do this. He said he knows people do it to steal cars. The key acts as the fuse in the ignition, so if they break the ignition housing they can hot-wire the car to start it. I am sure this was a very simple explanation of the process.
