carry an extra

I learned today that I need to carry an extra pair of goggles when I swim. The one I have been using for almost a year broke today as I went through my pre-swim ritual. I showered off, wet the swim cap, put in the ear plugs, put on the cap, and then came the goggles. I put them over my head and “snap”. The band broke. So I thought I would just try to re-thread it, but it broke off at the part that was too wide to go through the strap holders. So I swam twelve laps with no goggles. I will buy two pair and have a back up with me when I swim!

protest

I became aware of a few opportunities to do something, small though it may be. I hope that when joined with others, at least it will make some kind of noise to be heard…

I know not everyone stands on the same side of issues as I do. I may be in the minority, but I still feel it’s important to say what I believe and to stand for it in ways that I can. This week is providing two such opportunities.

Tuesday, March 31, has been dubbed “Red Envelope Day.” I am sending an empty red envelope to the president. On the back I have stated that the envelope represents one child killed by abortion. It is empty because the child is no longer able to be part of our world.

Then on Wednesday, April 1, those who want to speak out against the stimulus plans, the overtaxing, the over-borrowing, the overspending, there is a New TEA Party brewing. On April 1, all who are so inclined are asked to send a tea bag to Washington to express our “dissatisfaction” over these issues. Then, on April 15, there will be protest rallies across the nation to express the same ideas.

If you stand against these things, these are some ways you can take part as well.

Peleg

Today we were having a family discussion on the book of Genesis. We talked about many things: our favorite stories and verses, what things may mean, and what we have heard others say that certain things mean. My dad pointed out one verse:10:25. In this there is a man named Peleg whose name means “division”. It says he was so named because in his time the earth was divided. I have always thought that meant an earthquake happened, which sounded pretty cool. But my dad said that many people believe that the continents all used to be joined together in one land mass (which I pretty much lean toward believing.) He said that folks who believe this point to this verse as the time when the plates were separated.  I love that! It seems to make sense and would go along with the story that follows about the tower of Babel.

MLK memorial

I heard a commercial today talking about building a memorial for Martin Luther King, Jr. It is hoped to have it built on the National Mall in Washington D.C. You can find more information at the website . You can even help support it while surfing the internet. If you download their toolbar and use it for searches, they can earn $.05.

ouch

I have learned just how much going to the chiropractor can hurt! I had my foot worked on again yesterday. Since I was responding so well and seemingly quickly to the treatments, he decided to add a little more pressure to the “massage” therapy. OUCH! It hurt so bad it brought tears to my eyes. He stopped then but I am really feeling sore. I could hardly walk on it last night. Luckily (?!) I go back in the morning so we’ll so how I am doing then.

editing blog posts

wow! I just learned something that took me nearly a year to figure out! Last summer I purchased a domain name for a custom blog using a WordPress format. I just realized today that there is an “edit” button at the top, next to my keyword tags. It is hard to see as it just looks like one of the keywords, but nine months or so is a long time to notice it! At least now I can edit a post from the blog page instead of having to go into the dashboard!

no bags allowed

I learned a lot this week while in Boston. I don’t even know what all to document! One of the last things I learned is that no bags are allowed in the Fleet Center/Northbank Garden-where the Celtics play. (It seems that purses are allowed and they let me take in my small string backpack.) After walking around with our back packs, we had no where to leave them once we were informed of this, inside the arena. There is a bar across the street that will hold bags for $10! It was really our only option. There are no lockers, but a “holding room”. Our bags were safe while we were there and I am glad that there was some option.

our town

In doing Texas history, I wanted my daughter to do some current events about the town we live in. I made a sort of scavenger hunt for her and she had to put together a scrapbook. I too have learned things about our town this week. I learned there is a nice, new park with a pond and sidewalk and playground. The new longhorn museum is set to open in May. There is an apartment complex being demolished. The water tower near us is being repainted. A local bridge was demolished last weekend and the one near us is scheduled to be taken out in April. Right now, the construction is “slightly ahead of schedule!” I also found out that they are building new medical facilities in our town to help with the population boom we are having and expecting. I am sure there are lots more things going on, but these are a few of the things I learned this week!

chiropractor

I did not know that going to the chiropractor would help my foot! I just learned yesterday that it can! While talking to the lady at the running shoe store, she recommended I see the chiropractor about the foot pain I have been experiencing. I also learned that I could get a twenty minute consultation for free, so I thought, why not! He was very nice and I quickly felt comfortable. He used a tuning fork to see if I had a stress fracture. It seems that there is no fracture and is likely inflammation in the metatarsal joint. He also discovered the difference in the range of motion between my left and right ankles and hips. I like how we talked about treatment to get healthy, and he also is going to have me go through exercises and stretches to do at home to keep me healthy!

Lincoln’s Last Photo?

I saw a little blurb on Yahoo today where U.S. Grant’s great-great-grandson, U.S. Grant VI, was going through some photos. He found one which is believed to possibly be Lincoln’s last photo before being assassinated. I also learned that there are only about 130 photos of Lincoln, so this could be an exciting find. It will be hard to tell though, as the figure being identified as Lincoln, is in the background and the face is blurred.
