Over this past weekend, my husband and I have gotten numerous emails about boycotting the upcoming movie
The Golden Compass. I’ve not had any exposure to this book (other than seeing it listed in the Scholastic order form) before this weekend. I have not done a great deal of research on it, but have read a little about it, including the snopes article everyone is sending through cyberspace.
I can say that I do not agree with the message of the movie/book/trilogy. I have that right. As does everyone else-whether they agree or not. But my question is this. If these books have been around for ten years, why is there just now an outcry against them? Why is there such an outcry against this movie in particular? There are a great many books/movies/television shows that teach evil and/or values that go against some peoples’ morals and values. Why are we not boycotting them? Don’t we send a better message if we choose to avoid all such things within our own families? The message may not be received by Hollywood or the print industry, but it will most certainly be ascertained by our children.
